Director, Quantum Finance Engineering

Job Description

Job Title: Director, Quantum Finance Engineering. Location: Remote, US (onsite or hybrid options: College Park, MD; Bothell, WA)

You will collaborate with hardware, software, and research teams to deliver scalable quantum solutions and engage with financial institutions to co-develop pilots.

Duties:

  • Lead research and development in quantum algorithms for finance, including portfolio optimization, option pricing, risk modeling, fraud detection, and derivative valuation.
  • Build and mentor a team of quantum scientists, financial engineers, and software developers;
  • Translate financial problems into quantum algorithmic frameworks for NISQ and future fault-tolerant devices.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and research teams to integrate quantum software and control systems.
  • Engage with global financial institutions to co-develop pilot programs.
  • Publish and present research at academic and industry venues to shape thought leadership in quantum finance.
  • Partner with business and product teams to translate research outcomes into deployable, scalable commercial offerings;
  • Represent IonQ in collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and consortia focused on quantum advantage in finance.
  • Travel 20–30% for customer engagements, research collaborations, and partnership initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Finance, or related field.
  • 10+ years in quantitative research, algorithm design, or computational finance, with at least 5 years in leadership;
  • Strong expertise in quantum computing, error correction, circuit compilation and optimization, high-performance computing, and quantum software engineering.
  • Experience with quantum algorithms, optimization, or machine learning; familiarity with Qiskit, Cirq, IonQ SDK, or PennyLane.
  • Deep knowledge of financial modeling, stochastic calculus, and numerical methods;
  • Proven record of publishing or deploying innovative quantum or finance solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and executive-level audiences.

Benefits and Instructions:

  • Base salary range: $187,358–$245,300, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.
  • Compensation depends on experience, skills, and market location;
