Senior Cryogenic Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Cryogenic Engineer. Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and build next-generation cryostats for quantum photon detector systems
  • Take ownership of the complete hardware lifecycle from concept through validation and deployment
  • Operate, test, maintain, and troubleshoot cryogenic systems, including He-4 evaporator systems and dilution refrigerators
  • Work with cryogenic liquid and gas systems to achieve optimal cooling performance;
  • Support the deployment of large-scale cryogenic facilities with high recovery and operational efficiency
  • Collaborate with scientific, engineering, subcontractor, and external partner teams to improve cryogenic platforms
  • Design and enhance detector systems to improve performance and scalability for quantum computing applications
  • Integrate hardware across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related technical field
  • At least 5 years of cryogenic industry experience
  • Experience leading cryostat design and development projects
  • Experience with CAD and thermal/mechanical simulation tools such as SolidWorks
  • Extensive hands-on experience operating cryostats, including cooldowns, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • Experience with high-vacuum systems used in cryogenic environments
  • Experience handling and distributing liquid cryogens;
  • Knowledge of liquid heat exchanger design and fabrication
  • Experience operating pulse tube, liquid-cryogen, sorption, and dilution refrigerator systems
  • Knowledge of low-temperature material properties and engineering simulations
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on complex engineering projects

Preferred:

  • 7+ years of cryogenic industry experience
  • Experience with statistical process control and quality management systems
  • Experience writing Python code
  • Knowledge of Canadian and international pressure vessel and electrical system regulations
