What does a quantum finance professional actually do? 

Using quantum computers means solving money puzzles like helping determine the best stocks that an investor should purchase, figuring out the price financial products should be sold, and identifying fraudulent credit card transactions within seconds. It’s like having an extremely advanced calculator & analyzes multiple combinations of investments simultaneously, rather than sequentially.

Do I need a finance background or quantum physics background? 

Yes, and for a good reason! Most people begin with a solid foundation, either within the domain of finance, which is understanding the market, evaluating risk and trading OR within the domain of STEM, which is math, physics and computer science, the later is often the case. Likewise, many quantum finance practitioners hold and combine other industry experience with a banking or investment firm.

Which companies hire quantum finance professionals? 

Quantum research is being funded and pursued by the large banks and investment firms within the finance domain, which include Credit Suisse, HSBC, et al. Tech companies which include IBM, Google, and Microsoft also hire people to develop quantum finance applications. How much do quantum finance jobs pay? 

Entry-level positions typically pay $90,000-130,000 a year; mid-level professionals earn $140,000-$200,000, and senior quantum finance experts can make $220,000-350,000+ especially at major investment banks and hedge funds. What problems can quantum computers solve in finance that regular computers can't?

Quantum computers can solve optimization problems exponentially faster, making tasks like maximizing investment returns, while minimizing risk much more efficient.

It's transitioning from experimental to practical! HSBC is launching quantum technology within a simulated trading framework with real-time market data. While full-scale implementation is still a few years away, other banks are heavily investing in pilot programs so that they can be fully prepared when quantum technology advances.
