Google is a technology company known for its search engine, AI, and quantum computing research.
About
In 2013, Google kicked off its quantum computing journey and opened the Quantum AI Lab. The following year, the company achieved its first significant milestone and demonstrated "quantum supremacy" with its 53-qubit Sycamore processor. This achievement showed the world the capabilities of quantum computers and their potential to perform certain calculations in a fraction of the time classical supercomputers can. In the years since, Google has worked on building quantum computers with increased capabilities, focusing on developing more powerful and error-resistant quantum processors.
In 2024, Google presented its Willow quantum chip, having 105 qubits and outstanding error correction capabilities. Willow completed a benchmark computation in less than 5 minutes, whereas classical supercomputers would take an impractical time to complete the task. In the following years, Google hopes to commercially release quantum computing applications within 5 years. Google's initial focus will be on materials science, pharmaceuticals, and energy research.
