Job Description

Job Title: Senior Operations Engineer - Cryo-Mechanical. Location: Redmond, Washington, USA

Job Type: Full-time, hybrid, 3 days per week in-office

Responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end program planning and execution for cryo-mechanical engineering initiatives, including cryostat installations, maintenance, upgrades, and associated mechanical designs.
  • Develop and maintain integrated program schedules, critical paths, and risk mitigation plans across internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Develop automated processes to reduce operational overhead while maintaining robust scheduling, record keeping, and inventory management.
  • Introduce tools, dashboards, and reporting systems that improve predictability, traceability, and engineering throughput;
  • Design, build, and deliver solutions that transform large raw datasets into actionable insights and support ongoing operational use.
  • Develop tactical schedules for simultaneous operations, anticipate coverage gaps, and help leadership address them proactively.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers, supply chain teams, fabrication partners, system integrators, and leadership.
  • Establish clear communication channels, technical deliverables, and accountability structures with vendors and internal engineering teams.
  • Support workflows for design reviews, DFM/DFT validation, and manufacturing readiness;
  • Develop systems and reports to track equipment configurations across sites, identify available resources, and forecast future requirements.
  • Contribute to Microsoft’s culture and values.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 3+ years of technical engineering experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 5+ years of technical engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Must meet applicable export control requirements and provide citizenship or permanent residency documentation when required.
  • Citizenship may be verified using a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may use other applicable documentation.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate plus 3+ years, Master’s plus 6+ years, or Bachelor’s plus 8+ years of technical engineering experience in the relevant fields, or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience managing cross-functional or cross-team projects.
  • 1+ year of experience reading and/or writing code.
  • Experience building project schedules, managing budgets, planning resources, and working across matrixed teams.
  • Experience establishing communication channels and accountability structures with vendors and engineering teams.
  • Experience developing workflows for design reviews, DFM/DFT validation, and manufacturing readiness;
  • Experience creating systems and reports for tracking equipment configurations, resource availability, and future needs.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools for measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research, and daily task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools throughout hardware development.
  • Experience working with cryogenic systems and cryo-mechanical engineering programs.
  • Experience with automation, scheduling, inventory management, and operational data systems.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Typical U.S. base pay range: $119,800 to $234,700 per year.
  • San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area range: $160,200 to $261,000 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits and compensation;
  • The role involves less than 25% travel.
  • Opportunity to work on advanced quantum hardware combining physics, electronics, and engineering.
