Job Title: Principal Compiler Engineer – Quantum Software. Location: Tokyo, Japan
Job Type: Full-time, On-site
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and improve compiler infrastructure for quantum-classical programming workflows
- Develop language front ends, type systems, intermediate representations, optimization passes, runtime interfaces, and backend integrations
- Build production-quality software primarily in Python and Rust
- Define and implement multi-level compiler architectures connecting programming languages, quantum circuits, runtime systems, and execution targets
- Analyze compiler performance, identify bottlenecks, and improve scalability for hybrid quantum-classical applications
- Help shape compiler architecture to ensure maintainability, extensibility, and long-term scalability;
- Collaborate with compiler teams in the UK and USA, with occasional international travel
- Partner with scientific, engineering, and product teams to transform research into production-ready software
- Lead complex software projects from architecture and planning through implementation, testing, documentation, and delivery
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical guidance;
- Establish software engineering standards and compiler development best practices
- Contribute to research publications, technical papers, conference submissions, and external collaborations where appropriate
Qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including extensive compiler or programming language development
- Strong programming skills in Python and Rust, or deep expertise in one with the ability to work professionally in both
- Experience with compiler implementation, including parsing, semantic analysis, type systems, intermediate representations, optimization, lowering, code generation, runtime integration, or program transformation;
- Strong understanding of programming language design, especially functional programming concepts and type systems
- Experience leading technically complex software projects in research or advanced engineering environments
- Ability to develop software from research prototypes to production-ready systems
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, scientific, product, and leadership teams
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical standards
Preferred:
- Experience with quantum computing, quantum programming languages, quantum circuit compilation, or hybrid quantum-classical workflows
- Experience with MLIR, LLVM, or similar compiler infrastructures
- Experience designing domain-specific languages or advanced type systems
- Background in functional programming languages such as Haskell, OCaml, F#, Scala, or Rust
- Experience with compiler correctness, formal methods, static analysis, or program verification
- Contributions to research publications, patents, or open-source projects;
- Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams
- Experience in high-performance computing, distributed systems, scientific software, or developer platforms
