Optics R&D Technician Intern

Job Description

Job Title: Optics R&D Technician Intern. Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Work with engineers, physicists, and technicians to advance trapped-ion quantum computing technologies
  • Help set up a new optics and photonics lab, including optical, mechanical, and electronics systems
  • Design, build, test, and align optical systems such as lasers and imaging systems;
  • Support planning, development, maintenance, and management of the lab facility
  • Provide technical support to resolve lab and equipment issues and implement corrective actions
  • Prepare engineering specifications, standard operating procedures, and documentation for operation and maintenance
  • Assist Procurement and Materials Management in acquiring and tracking lab equipment and infrastructure
  • Partner with Environment, Health and Safety teams to ensure compliance with safety protocols;
  • Monitor laboratory conditions such as temperature and humidity and coordinate with Facilities when needed
  • Work in a lab environment and lift up to 25 pounds when required

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a quantum technician training program before the internship begins
  • Graduating or completing a technical training program on or after 2026
  • Must be a U.S. Person, including U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, asylum status, or refugee status
  • Must not be a national of the People’s Republic of China or Russia unless also a U.S. citizen, due to U.S. national security requirements

Preferred:

  • 2 or more years of experience in an optics lab environment
  • 5 or more years of technical experience, including degree-related experience
  • Hands-on experience building and testing optical systems with knowledge of lasers, free-space optics, fiber optics, micro-optics, and imaging systems
  • Experience building experimental setups from scratch;
  • Ability to follow technical drawings, work instructions, and test protocols
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with mechanical design or CAD systems
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills;
  • Interest in obtaining certifications related to facilities, hazardous materials, laser safety officer, or safety supervision

  • Hourly pay range of $23 to $27, based on skills, education, and experience
  • $500 housing stipend per bi-weekly check for candidates located outside the state
