Job Description
Job Title: Quantum Hardware Engineering Jobs. Location: United States or United Kingdom (hybrid, with international customer-site travel)
Responsibilities:
- Lead technical deployments, define experimental plans, execute experiments and calibrations, validate system performance against specifications, and document results.
- Troubleshoot failures across hardware, software, infrastructure, wiring, electronics, devices, and fabrication, identifying root causes and coordinating solutions.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for customers during on-site deployments, communicating findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Monitor deployed systems for performance regressions, calibration drift, and outages, and take proactive corrective action.
- Train internal team members and customer personnel on relevant procedures, workflows, and best practices;
- Improve internal tools, documentation, and automation to increase repeatability and reduce manual work.
- Collaborate with R&D teams to improve device performance and scalability.
- For the Systems & Integration track, plan cooldown experiments, characterize qubits and readout, validate coherence and qubit and line yields, troubleshoot hardware, fabrication, and design issues, and provide remote support between deployments.
- For the Gate Calibration & Deployment track, benchmark single- and two-qubit gate performance, calibrate production devices, resolve systematic errors affecting gate fidelity, maintain automated recalibration systems, and test and release new calibrations with minimal disruption to uptime.
- Travel internationally to customer sites approximately 10% to 25% of the time.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent degree with relevant industry or postdoctoral experience.
- A bachelor's or master's degree with at least three years of relevant experience may also qualify.
- Hands-on experience with superconducting qubits;
- Proficiency in Python for scientific or engineering applications.
- Strong systematic debugging skills across the complete measurement chain, including wiring, electronics, devices, and software.
- Ability to work in customer-facing field environments with limited on-site infrastructure support;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including writing experimental reports and explaining findings to non-specialists.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally 10% to 25% of the time.
Additional qualifications for Systems & Integration: Experience troubleshooting cryogenic microwave hardware.
Additional qualifications for Gate Calibration & Deployment:
- Experience calibrating and characterizing single- and two-qubit gates on superconducting devices.
- Strong quantitative understanding of gate errors, including decoherence, leakage, and control distortion.
- Experience writing high-quality code and participating in formal code reviews using Git.
Preferred:
Systems & Integration:
- Experience operating and troubleshooting dilution refrigerators.
- Knowledge of common qubit failure modes, including two-level systems (TLS), flux noise, and packaging issues.
- Software development experience in an industrial team environment using Git, code review, and continuous integration.
- Previous customer-facing or field engineering experience.
Gate Calibration & Deployment:
- Experience with automated or scheduled recalibration in production or high-uptime environments.
- Familiarity with cloud deployment infrastructure, including AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, or Docker.
- Experience with pulse-level gate optimization, including DRAG, flux pulse shaping, and dynamical decoupling.
- Experience supporting rotational on-call or production-support schedules;
- Previous customer-facing or field engineering experience.
Benefits and additional information:
- Work at the forefront of quantum computing deployment and systems engineering.
- Collaborate with international teams across engineering, research, and development.
- Applications from women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups are encouraged.
- The company is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on protected characteristics;
- AI tools may assist with application reviews and verification, but final hiring decisions are made by humans.
