Optical Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Optical Engineer (Ph.D. / Early Career). Location: British Columbia, Canada

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to optical design and validation workflows, including modeling and testing methodologies
  • Support the specification and modeling of optical link architectures
  • Develop fiber-based electro-optical assemblies and optical sub-systems using advanced photonic technologies
  • Perform optical characterization, testing, and data analysis to validate system performance;
  • Track technical metrics such as stability, reliability, environmental robustness, and noise sensitivity
  • Collaborate with integrated photonics and quantum systems teams for cross-functional alignment
  • Support telemetry and control systems for monitoring and optimizing optical parameters
  • Evaluate new optical component technologies and contribute to innovation initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Optics, Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related field
  • Strong background in fiber-based optical systems, preferably in C-band or O-band technologies
  • Experience with optical modeling, simulation, and data analysis tools
  • Hands-on experience with optical test instrumentation and laboratory measurements
  • Proficiency in Python or other scripting languages for automation and analysis;
  • Ability to translate research concepts into practical prototype systems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary environments

Preferred:

  • Experience transitioning research systems into scalable or manufacturable solutions
  • Familiarity with CAD and modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Lumerical, or Altium;
  • Exposure to intellectual property development or technology commercialization
  • Experience working in startup or fast-growth research environments

  • Base salary range: CAD $94,200 to $130,000 annually
