Job Title: Process Integration Engineer. Location: Multiple locations, Canada. Job type: Full-time, Mid-level
This role sits within the Fabrication Process Engineering team and focuses on delivering high-performance integrated photonic hardware for quantum computing systems.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and optimize fabrication process modules for integrated photonic devices using crystalline electro-optic materials such as thin-film lithium niobate.
- Own and manage wafer lots processed at external foundry partners, ensuring quality and delivery timelines.
- Design and execute process improvement experiments, including fabrication splits, inline data collection, and result analysis.
- Define and carry out metrology and failure analysis plans to identify root causes and improve process performance;
- Collaborate closely with internal engineers and external foundry partners across process integration, photonics design, and fabrication.
- Push the state of the art in integrated photonics fabrication by improving key performance metrics such as optical loss.
- Stay current with new developments in photonics fabrication and rapidly apply new techniques and learnings.
Qualifications:
- PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- At least 10 years of experience in a semiconductor or integrated photonics foundry environment.
- Experience across the full product lifecycle, from research and development to volume manufacturing.
- Strong background in semiconductor fabrication process development and optimization.
- Proven ability to deliver low-loss integrated photonic components through process engineering;
- Hands-on experience with metrology and failure analysis techniques such as SEM, TEM, AFM, ellipsometry, XRD, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy, or photoluminescence.
- Familiarity with passive and active photonic components including waveguides, modulators, resonators, and interferometers.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 20 percent as required.
Preferred:
- Five or more years of experience with integrated photonics fabrication using electro-optic materials like lithium niobate.
- Experience etching waveguides in crystalline electro-optic materials.
- Background in tool procurement, evaluation, installation, and process qualification;
- Experience with data analysis tools and software, including Python and version control systems.
- Experience working in fabless company environments.
- Proficiency in Mandarin.
