Electrical Engineer

Job Description

Job title: Electrical Engineer. Location: Redmond, Washington, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Translate electrical requirements, schematics, constraints, and mechanical inputs into complex PCB assembly designs and layouts.
  • Own the architecture and implementation of electrical subsystems.
  • Develop and maintain board design documentation, including schematics, electrical constraint specifications, fabrication outputs, and assembly outputs.
  • Evaluate component options and select the most suitable components for each subsystem.
  • Work with electrical, mechanical, signal integrity, power integrity, systems integration, and manufacturing teams to resolve design trade-offs and incorporate feedback.
  • Develop and support verification plans, board bring-up, hardware characterization, debugging, and root-cause analysis;
  • Identify design and project risks early, recommend improvements, and communicate project status to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with firmware and software teams to ensure electrical designs meet project needs and remain simple to debug.
  • Define PCB stack-ups, component placement, routing, grounding, return paths, and layer-use strategies for low-noise, mixed-signal, high-density, and high-reliability electronics.
  • Work with PCB designers to evaluate placement and routing trade-offs.
  • Follow Microsoft's culture and values.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, plus at least 2 years of industry experience; or a master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to use AI tools to improve innovation and efficiency, including measurement, performance modeling, analysis, research, and task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment and use modern AI tools throughout hardware development.

Preferred:

  • Experience using schematic and PCB layout tools to develop complex, multilayer PCBs through fabrication and assembly release.
  • Experience with controlled impedance, differential pairs, mixed-signal design, grounding, and return-path constraints.
  • Strong understanding of electrical principles, power supplies, and basic analog and digital circuits.
  • Knowledge of PCB stack-ups, materials, via structures, component placement, mechanical constraints, and design for manufacturability.
  • Experience collaborating across electrical, mechanical, systems, verification, and manufacturing teams throughout the hardware development lifecycle.
  • Experience designing electronics for low-noise, radio-frequency, precision-measurement, or other demanding environments;
  • Experience with signal integrity or power integrity analysis and using simulation results to improve board designs.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing, design for test, rigid-flex construction, advanced laminates, HDI/microvias, or high-density interconnect technologies.
  • Experience preparing fabrication and assembly documentation and working with PCB fabrication and assembly suppliers.
  • Experience supporting board bring-up, verification, failure analysis, and corrective design changes.
