Job Description
Job Title: Research Intern: Scalable Fabrication of Superconducting Quantum Devices. Location:
- Berkeley, California, USA
- On-site at the UC Berkeley Marvell NanoLab cleanroom
Responsibilities:
- Fabricate superconducting qubits and Josephson tunnel junctions in a cleanroom environment.
- Prepare, edit, and verify CAD layout files.
- Develop and optimize lithography processes.
- Operate and assist with plasma etching processes, including ICP and RIE.
- Perform electrical and structural characterization of fabricated structures;
- Analyze fabrication data to identify process trends and improve yield and uniformity.
- Document experimental procedures, process results, and design iterations;
- Collaborate with scientists and process engineers to improve the scalability and reproducibility of superconducting qubit fabrication.
- Gain hands-on experience across the complete fabrication workflow, including device layout, nanofabrication, microscopy, and process optimization.
- Compare fabricated devices through measurements at Rigetti to inform process development.
Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience working in a semiconductor or nanofabrication cleanroom.
- Experience with one or more lithography techniques, including photolithography or electron-beam lithography.
- Experience with dry etching techniques such as ICP and RIE;
- Fluency in one or more GDSII-based CAD layout tools, such as KLayout, LayoutEditor, Cadence, L-Edit, or similar.
- Strong experimental skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced research environment.
Preferred:
- Current or previous membership with the UC Berkeley Marvell NanoLab cleanroom.
- Experience with AlOx Josephson junctions.
- Training in electrical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related field.
Benefits and Compensation:
- $35 to $50 per hour.
- Undergraduate academic level: $35 per hour.
- Master's academic level: $45 per hour.
- Graduate academic level: $50 per hour.
- Housing stipend of up to $2,000 for candidates relocating for the summer.
- Hands-on experience with superconducting quantum hardware fabrication.
