Job Description
Job Title: Senior Electronics Engineer. Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom - Hybrid working
Responsibilities:
- Monitor, diagnose, prioritize, and root-cause electrical, control-system, and drive-electronics issues on live quantum systems.
- Design, prototype, build, and test electrical fixes, including schematic capture, PCB layout, board-level testing, and system-level testing.
- Take engineering solutions from initial concept through permanent integration into operational systems.
- Lead electrical workstreams for fleet-wide reliability upgrades, including control-hardware consolidation, drive-electronics standardization, and remote telemetry and monitoring for laser and system health;
- Coordinate with Operations and Science teams to schedule, deploy, and retrofit upgrades onto live quantum systems.
- Verify that deployed fixes improve system performance, reliability, or operability.
- Standardize validated fixes through engineering documentation, build manifests, and the Engineering Change Request (ECR) process.
- Work closely with Operations, Science, Manufacturing, and Engineering teams to maintain reliable development and production hardware.
Qualifications:
- Strong practical experience with analogue and mixed-signal electronics design.
- Experience designing and debugging op-amp circuits, low-noise amplifiers, filters, ADC/DAC modules, grounding, shielding, and common digital interfaces.
- Strong experience using the Altium PCB toolset for evolving schematics and PCB designs.
- Experience producing technical documentation and managing design reviews, ERC/DRC, releases, and engineering change control.
- Ability to diagnose power supplies, analogue circuits, and control electronics;
- Experience developing reliable PCBs, adapters, connectors, breakout cables, and harnesses.
- Strong RF knowledge and confidence working directly on operational hardware under time pressure.
- Ability to translate system-level reliability problems into practical engineering solutions.
- Ability to gather requirements, communicate technical issues and trade-offs across disciplines, and take solutions through testing, deployment, and documentation.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with LVDS and FPGA-based control electronics.
- Experience with cryogenic systems or RF/microwave systems.
- Experience with Python-based test automation or telemetry.
- Experience working with trapped-ion quantum computing hardware is relevant to the role.
