Job Description
Job Title: Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Field Robotics). Location:
- Redmond, Washington, United States
- 4 days per week in-office
- Travel less than 25%
Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and execute field test campaigns for robotic systems across customer sites, partner facilities, and first-party environments.
- Test robots in indoor semi-structured environments and unstructured outdoor terrain that replicate real operating conditions.
- Develop and maintain structured test protocols, acceptance criteria, data collection procedures, and reporting templates.
- Deploy, configure, and operate robotic platforms, including hardware setup, software provisioning, network configuration, sensor calibration, and site-specific infrastructure integration;
- Collect and analyze sensor logs, telemetry streams, performance metrics, video recordings, and environmental measurements.
- Produce clear and actionable test reports for engineering and program leadership.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues across the full robot stack, including mechanical, electrical, software, networking, and AI behavior.
- Perform initial root cause analysis and work with engineering teams to resolve complex issues with documented reproduction steps.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, software engineers, AI researchers, and program managers to communicate field findings and prioritize improvements.
- Validate bug fixes and design changes through follow-up field testing;
- Identify gaps in deployment and testing processes and contribute to continuous improvement of field operations.
- Maintain documentation for deployment procedures, site configurations, inventory management, and service support workflows.
- Participate in test triage and review meetings to support faster issue resolution and prepare for future field campaigns.
- Assist with end-to-end readiness programs, mentoring, knowledge sharing, technical documentation, and field operations training materials.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
- Or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 5+ years of technical engineering experience.
- Equivalent experience may also be considered;
- Must be able to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
- Must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred:
- Doctorate in a relevant engineering field with 3+ years of experience, Master’s degree with 6+ years, or Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of experience.
- Hands-on experience deploying, operating, or testing robotic systems, autonomous vehicles, drones, or complex electromechanical systems in field environments.
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS2, Linux-based systems, cameras, LiDAR, IMUs, and robot debugging and data visualization tools.
- Experience with structured test planning, acceptance testing, or verification and validation methodologies for integrated hardware and software systems.
- Proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages for test automation, data analysis, and log processing;
- Strong technical documentation skills, including test reports, field deployment guides, and issue tracking documentation.
- Willingness and ability to travel to customer and partner sites and work in warehouses, laboratories, and outdoor environments.
Benefits And Compensation:
- Typical U.S. base salary range of $119,800 to $234,700 per year.
- Higher base salary range of $160,200 to $261,000 per year for applicable roles in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.
- Certain roles may also be eligible for additional benefits and compensation.
