Job Description
Job Title: Lead Data Engineer. Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical design and delivery of data pipelines supporting R&D, manufacturing, and business analytics
- Build and scale cloud-based data infrastructure for data ingestion, transformation, and serving;
- Define data models with researchers, analysts, and technical teams to ensure accurate and accessible data storage
- Establish data governance practices including lineage tracking, cataloging, access control, and quality monitoring
- Drive best practices for code quality, testing, data reliability, and observability
- Balance new platform development, infrastructure improvements, and technical debt reduction
- Utilize AI-assisted tooling to improve engineering productivity;
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership as the data engineering function grows
- Support data-driven decision-making across scientific, operational, and business teams
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering
- 2+ years of experience in a lead or architect role
- Strong experience building and scaling cloud-based data platforms
- Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, or similar cloud technologies;
- Experience designing and operating data lake or lakehouse architectures such as Delta Lake, Iceberg, or Hudi
- Expertise in distributed systems and maintaining data integrity at scale
- Experience with modern data engineering tools such as dbt, Fivetran, Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect
- Strong Python and SQL programming skills;
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices
- Proven ability to establish technical standards and improve engineering processes
- Experience collaborating with R&D, scientific, or cross-functional teams handling complex datasets
Preferred:
- Experience in a deep-tech, hardware, semiconductor, or scientific research environment
- Familiarity with data generated from physical measurement systems
- Experience working with scientific and time-series data formats such as HDF5 and Parquet
- Experience building a data engineering function from the ground up;
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and laboratory workflows
