Optical Process Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Optical Process Engineer. Location: Milpitas, California, United States

You will work across packaging, processing, and qualification in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with internal teams and external suppliers to deliver high-quality quantum subsystems that operate at room temperature and cryogenic conditions.

Duties:

  • Develop assembly process flows and build sub-assemblies for quantum computer subsystems using electronics and photonics chips on PCBAs.
  • Support opto-mechanical packaging for both vacuum and cryogenic environments;
  • Finalize designs and assembly processes using DFM, DFQ, and FMEA methods.
  • Deliver and qualify tooling, equipment, and fixtures from suppliers with process capability analysis and reporting.
  • Release process documentation, work instructions, and control plans with change control management.
  • Train, audit, and transition processes to operations teams for volume manufacturing;
  • Develop in-house processes and manage external contract manufacturing partners.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and leadership during R&D prototype builds and NPI pilot lines.
  • Guide and train technicians to support the R&D prototype line and maintain a safe work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience solving complex optical process and opto-mechanical assembly challenges.
  • Experience with photonics sub-assembly, semiconductor packaging, and inspection processes such as die attach, wire bonding, optical coupling, flip chip, and underfill.
  • Familiarity with opto-mechanical packaging equipment, suppliers, and quality systems;
  • Experience transferring processes from R&D to operations and supporting volume manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with data processing tools such as Python; experience with compiled languages like C++ is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead in ambiguous situations.
