Photonic IC Layout Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Photonic IC Layout Engineer. Location: British Columbia, Canada

Responsibilities:

• Design and optimize complex active and passive photonic integrated circuits (PICs) at large scale.
• Propose and implement innovative design solutions for scalable quantum technologies.
• Implement custom process design kits (PDKs) in common CAD tools.
• Generate new software and scripts as needed to meet design goals.
• Collaborate with foundries and manufacturers on tape-outs and integration.
• Address integration issues with other chips and systems;
• Drive research and development in the silicon photonic space.
• Contribute to the company's IP portfolio.
• Work closely with photonic designers, nanofabrication engineers, test engineers, and physicists.
• Train and mentor team members on frameworks and best practices.

Qualifications:

• Master’s or PhD in electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related discipline.
• 3+ years of experience with photonic layout design in a professional setting.
• Strong expertise in KLayout, Luceda, Cadence, Mentor Graphics, or equivalent tools.
• Experience designing and optimizing silicon photonic integrated circuits.
• Proficient in programming languages such as Python and MATLAB;
• Strong understanding of photonics, electronics, and electromagnetic compatibility.
• Experience with foundry tape-outs, PDK usage, DRC, and LVS.
• Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

• 5+ years of experience with silicon photonics in industry.
• Familiarity with photonic device and circuit design, modeling tools like Lumerical FDTD, INTERCONNECT.
• Knowledge of RF/Microwave circuits including testing, packaging, signal integrity, power dissipation.
• Experience with cryogenic PICs, PIC packaging, quantum optics;
• Experience with various photonics technologies and integrated circuit fabrication.
• Knowledge of VLSI and custom PDK development (LVS/DRC systems).
