Quantum Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Quantum Engineer. Location: Berkeley, CA or Fremont, CA

Responsibilities:

• Characterize experimental devices, assess performance, identify areas for improvement, and provide feedback to internal development teams.
• Lead technical efforts on R&D topics, including gate calibration, qubit relaxation/dephasing, piloting new research ideas on small processors, integrating innovations into larger processors, and implementing quantum error correction.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (fabrication, design, electronics, software) to convert experimental concepts into robust technologies for large-scale quantum processing units;
• Stay current with cutting-edge research, synthesize results from literature, and implement state-of-the-art calibration, error diagnostics, and system optimization techniques to improve device performance.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics or a similar applied scientific field, or a Master’s in Physics with 2+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Proven ability in experimental problem solving and research.
• Expertise in practical implementation of coherent quantum effects and control.
• Proficiency with Python in scientific contexts;
• Strong collaboration skills with a team-first mindset.
• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred:

• Experience calibrating and characterizing single- and two-qubit superconducting qubits.
• Experience with quantum simulation frameworks such as QuTip;
• Proven ability to execute and communicate outcomes of innovative research and development initiatives.
• Software development experience in an industry or startup setting.
• Prior technical role in an industrial or startup environment.

Benefits and Compensation:

• Base salary: $155,000 - $200,000 per year. Final salary depends on experience, skills, and location.
