Chief Architect for Developer Tools

Job Description

Job Title: Chief Architect for Developer Tools. Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the senior technical authority for quantum software developer tools and platform architecture
  • Design and evolve scalable developer tooling, including compilers, logical encodings, emulation systems, and debugging tools
  • Collaborate with algorithm teams and end users to define platform capabilities and developer workflows
  • Lead hardware-software co-design efforts with QPU, firmware, and systems engineering teams;
  • Optimize quantum workloads, compilation pipelines, and execution frameworks for performance and scalability
  • Identify architectural bottlenecks and define optimization strategies across runtime systems and algorithms
  • Provide technical leadership in quantum compilation, performance engineering, and algorithm optimization
  • Support external research collaborations, publications, and open initiatives;
  • Partner with product, engineering, and executive stakeholders to shape long-term technology strategy
  • Establish software standards, architectural principles, and design review processes
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads to improve platform quality and maintainability

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • 3 to 5+ years in a senior architect or technical leadership role;
  • Experience in quantum computing, high-performance computing, or developer platforms
  • Strong experience with scalable software architecture and production-ready systems

Preferred:

  • Experience with quantum programming frameworks and quantum circuit design
  • Knowledge of noise models and quantum error correction techniques
  • Expert-level programming skills in Python and C++, or Rust;
  • Experience designing compilers, distributed systems, and developer platforms
  • Experience with quantum compiler design and QEC software implementation
  • Publications or patents in quantum computing
  • Strong communication and technical leadership skills
  • Ability to collaborate across physics, hardware, and software teams
