Job Description
Job Title: Sr. Laser Scientist, Quantum Sensing. Location: Sydney, Australia
This role involves designing, testing, and optimizing advanced laser architectures for field deployment, working closely with teams in atomic physics, hardware development, & quantum control engineering.
Duties:
- Design, develop, and test high-performance laser systems for quantum atomic sensing hardware.
- Focus on system miniaturisation and ruggedisation for field-deployable applications;
- Collaborate with quantum control engineers and hardware development teams to integrate control and data systems.
- Develop and analyze optical designs, operational mechanisms, and control solutions for quantum sensors.
- Interact with external hardware partners for system integration and data fusion support;
- Improve quantum sensor performance under realistic environmental conditions.
- Perform device design, assembly, commissioning, and data analysis for laser-based quantum sensing instruments.
- Contribute to team research, knowledge sharing, and collaborative R&D efforts within the inertial sensing team.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience with fiber and free-space laser systems.
- Experience in laser system design, construction, and testing;
- Knowledge or strong interest in cold atom systems, atomic interferometry, or quantum sensing.
- Experience designing and building rugged optical, photonic, or laser systems for field use;
- Hands-on experience in scientific device construction and performance optimization.
- Motivation to work in a world-class quantum research environment focused on real-world impact.
Preferred:
- Research or lab experience in quantum optics or experimental cold atom physics;
- Knowledge of fiber and electro-optics at 780 nm, 832 nm, and 1560 nm wavelengths.
- Familiarity with digital hardware and software for agile RF and microwave control systems.
