Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II. Location: New Haven, Connecticut, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Design, prototype, test, and improve mechanical components and subassemblies for complex electromechanical systems
  • Develop and maintain CAD models, detailed drawings, bills of materials, and engineering documentation
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles, including tolerance analysis, material selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Evaluate thermal design constraints, including CTE mismatch, bolted joints, heat transfer, electronics enclosure cooling, and cryogenic component thermalization using calculations, test data, FEA, CFD, and simulation tools;
  • Support hands-on assembly, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and validation of prototype and production hardware
  • Document test results, design updates, assembly procedures, and engineering improvements
  • Work closely with engineering teams and suppliers to resolve fabrication, assembly, and performance challenges

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent training and experience
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in mechanical design or mechanical engineering
  • Experience independently managing engineering projects from concept through testing and release
  • Proficiency with professional CAD software and solid modeling
  • Experience creating and interpreting detailed mechanical drawings, including tolerances, fits, and GD&T
  • Experience designing machined and sheet-metal components;
  • Strong hands-on mechanical skills gained through laboratory work, fabrication, machining, equipment maintenance, or similar experience
  • Ability to perform engineering analysis and communicate design assumptions, trade-offs, and results effectively
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills

  • Base salary of $104,000 to $156,000 USD per year
