Metrology Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Metrology Engineer. Location: Albany, NY, USA

In this role, you will develop, refine, and improve metrology protocols for critical materials and components in Xanadu’s quantum hardware; You will play a key part in advancing integrated photonics and semiconductor fabrication for next-generation quantum devices.

Duties:

  • Develop and implement inline metrology flows for monitoring key materials and device parameters across various technology platforms.
  • Improve measurement resolution and design new metrology methods for difficult-to-measure features;
  • Coordinate with external labs and metrology tool vendors to conduct advanced analysis and measurement experiments.
  • Work with internal software and data teams to improve data quality and enable accurate modeling and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with engineers across fabrication, materials, and failure analysis teams to enhance process performance.
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in photonics fabrication, metrology, and analysis tools.
  • Support tool evaluation and selection, defining performance metrics and acceptance criteria;
  • Maintain strong relationships with partners, vendors, and foundries to ensure efficient project execution.

Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Nanoengineering, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing inline metrology for photonics or semiconductor fabrication.
  • Proven background in integrated photonics or semiconductor process development;
  • Experience with SEM, TEM, AFM, ellipsometry, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, or similar metrology tools.
  • Ability to manage external vendors and foundry collaborations effectively.
  • Experience using manufacturing execution systems (MES) and working in a cleanroom or foundry environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and teamwork skills;
  • Excellent communication abilities and willingness to travel up to 25%.
  • Preferred: 6+ years of experience, multi-material characterization expertise, and familiarity with ultra-low loss photonic components.
