Job Title: Photonics Fabrication Process Engineer - SNSPD Nanofabrication. Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Job type: Full-time (Mid-level)
This role supports the development of advanced photonic quantum computing hardware through cutting-edge fabrication and detector technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Support the fabrication and performance improvement of Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) used in photon number resolving systems.
- Develop and optimize cleanroom fabrication processes for photonic quantum hardware.
- Perform thin-film characterization and metrology to ensure device quality and performance;
- Operate cleanroom tools including photolithography, electron beam lithography, deposition, and etching systems.
- Interface with internal teams to understand detector performance requirements and translate them into fabrication processes.
- Develop cleanroom recipes and maintain accurate process documentation;
- Apply statistical process control methods to monitor and improve fabrication consistency.
- Travel within Canada to support cleanroom development at partner facilities.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Experimental Sciences, or a related field with a focus on device fabrication.
- At least three years of hands-on cleanroom process development experience.
- Strong experience with thin-film stack metrology, characterization, and optimization.
- Practical knowledge of AFM, SEM, ellipsometry, and plasma or wet etching techniques;
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working in collaborative teams.
Preferred:
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, Experimental Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Understanding of cryogenic detector physics, including superconducting detector technologies;
- Experience fabricating or working with cryogenic detectors such as SNSPDs, TES, or MKIDs.
- Experience writing Python code for data analysis and statistical reporting.
