Thermo-Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Thermo-Mechanical Engineer. Location: Daresbury, England, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:

  • Design cryogenic assemblies and cryostat subsystems to improve thermal efficiency and reduce equipment costs
  • Develop solutions using Design for Manufacture (DfM) principles and cost engineering practices
  • Perform engineering calculations and finite element analyses to support hardware development
  • Design test setups and conduct experiments to validate thermo-mechanical models;
  • Produce manufacturing and assembly drawings for hardware components
  • Collaborate with systems engineering teams to transition prototypes into production-ready designs
  • Work with supply chain partners to optimize manufacturing cost, quality, and delivery schedules
  • Analyze cryogenic performance versus system cost to improve overall machine efficiency;
  • Support full lifecycle mechanical engineering activities from concept through deployment
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time to company headquarters and global suppliers

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering or a related discipline
  • At least 8 years of experience in a similar engineering role within a scientific or advanced technology environment
  • Strong knowledge of cryogenic systems, mechanical engineering, and thermal design
  • Experience with project management or systems engineering activities
  • Experience with Design for Manufacture and cost engineering methodologies;
  • Experience developing thermo-mechanical test procedures and experimental setups
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong problem-solving abilities

Preferred:

  • Experience designing cryogenic systems and associated hardware
  • Experience operating cryogenic systems in laboratory or production environments
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings and technical documentation
  • Strong mechanical design and analysis expertise, including GD&T;
  • Experience generating and maintaining bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Experience creating and maintaining specification trees
  • Experience performing tolerance analysis and evaluating impacts on thermo-mechanical performance
