Job Description
Job Title: Hardware Researcher – Ion Trap, Quantum Computing. Location: Wako, Tokyo, Japan
Responsibilities:
- Operate, maintain, develop, and upgrade H1-series trapped-ion quantum computers
- Evaluate and characterize quantum computer performance to improve operational and development strategies
- Design, develop, verify, and deploy systems using trapped ions as qubits;
- Work with engineers and scientists to develop and test new quantum computing concepts
- Support integration of quantum computing systems with classical supercomputers including Fugaku
- Participate in experimental research involving atomic systems and quantum device operation
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
- Hands-on experience building and operating systems for quantum spin, trapped-ion, or neutral-atom devices
- Ability to communicate technical concepts in both English and Japanese
- Ability to travel internationally for training or business needs;
- Must meet U.S. export control and technical access eligibility requirements
Preferred:
- Experience with laser systems, laser cooling, atom trapping, and cryogenics
- Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems and analog or digital electronics
- Experience controlling laboratory hardware and experimental systems;
- Strong Python programming, physical modeling, and data analysis experience
- Strong technical writing and scientific presentation skills supported by peer-reviewed publications
