Job Title: Principal Applied Scientist. Location: Multiple locations in the USA including Boston, MA; San Jose, CA; Sunnyvale, CA; New York City, NY; Seattle, WA; Bellevue, WA; Santa Clara, CA; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Palo Alto, CA

This role is ideal for scientists who want to combine innovation with large-scale real-world impact; You will help design long-term scientific strategies, mentor teams, and bring cutting-edge research into Amazon’s global products and services.

Duties:

• Define new research directions in applied science and machine learning.
• Develop, test, and deploy scalable AI and quantum computing models that solve complex business challenges.
• Publish research in leading journals and conferences;
• Lead the design and execution of experiments to validate model performance.
• Mentor and manage teams of scientists and engineers to deliver on ambitious goals;
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Amazon to integrate research into production systems.
• Participate in hiring and strategic planning for scientific projects.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
• At least 8 years of post-PhD research experience.
• Strong publication record in areas such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and applied AI.
• Expertise in Python, SQL, or similar scripting languages;
• Proven skills in algorithm development and model optimization.
• Experience mentoring senior scientists or technical teams;
• Preferred: proficiency in Java, C++, or related programming languages.
• Preferred: experience applying machine learning to business or large-scale data systems.

• Salary range: $179,000 to $309,400 per year, depending on location and experience.
