Job Description
Job Title: FPGA Design Engineer. Location: Toronto, ON, Canada
You will collaborate with physicists, engineers, and technicians to design, test, and optimize hardware modules, that support phase stabilization, optical modulation, photon detection & laser sequencing.
Duties:
- Design, implement, and test FPGA architectures using Verilog, VHDL, or SystemVerilog.
- Develop FPGA designs that interface with peripherals like ADCs and DACs for real-time feedback and control.
- Work on low-level communication protocols including SPI, I2C, JTAG, PCIe, and UART;
- Support the integration of FPGA modules with photonic quantum computing systems.
- Create simulation testbenches and conduct validation and verification of FPGA designs;
- Debug and optimize firmware and electronic modules in collaboration with hardware and research teams.
- Participate in schematic reviews and interpret circuit designs, datasheets, and technical documentation.
- Work with Vivado (preferred) or Quartus for synthesis, timing analysis, and design implementation.
- Provide ongoing support for lab testing and troubleshooting of prototype and production modules.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of FPGA design experience using Verilog or VHDL (SystemVerilog preferred).
- Proven experience interfacing with peripheral devices and communication protocols.
- Strong understanding of digital and analog circuit design and schematic interpretation.
- Hands-on experience with validation, verification, and debugging in lab environments.
- Familiarity with Vivado or Quartus, and scripting in Python and TCL;
- Experience in control system design (PID loops, feedback systems) is an advantage.
- Knowledge of clocking, timing constraints, and low jitter applications.
- Familiarity with Xilinx FPGAs (Series 7, Ultrascale+) preferred.
- Experience with source control tools such as git;
- Proficiency in C++ or embedded programming for microcontrollers.
- Knowledge of photonics or optical physics is a plus.
