Job Description

Job Title: Hardware Operations Engineer / Hardware Operations Engineer (Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer). Location: Wako, Japan

Responsibilities:

  • Operate, develop, upgrade, and maintain an H2-series quantum computer as part of a small team
  • Characterize the performance of a commercially operating quantum computer and develop plans to improve its operation and performance
  • Apply experimental laboratory research experience to design, develop, verify, and deploy quantum computers using trapped ions as qubits
  • Mentor and train junior team members in technical and operational matters;
  • Support the operation and development of the 56-qubit System Model H2 quantum computer, "REIMEI," at RIKEN's Wako campus
  • Contribute to a Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry project exploring the integrated use of quantum computers and classical supercomputers, including RIKEN's Fugaku supercomputer
  • Collaborate with global teams on quantum hardware operations and development

Qualifications:

  • PhD required
  • Minimum 3 years of post-graduate experience, including experience during an M.S. or PhD
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate technical topics verbally in both English and Japanese
  • Ability to travel internationally for training or business needs;
  • Must meet applicable technical access eligibility requirements under U.S. government national security and export control regulations
  • Certain nationalities, including some dual-nationality situations, may be restricted from accessing controlled technical information and may therefore be ineligible

Preferred:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field preferred
  • Proven hardware expertise in atomic physics systems, superconducting qubits, or other quantum computing platforms
  • Experience with lasers, laser cooling, atom trapping, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, analog and digital electronics, and laboratory hardware control
  • Experience with Python, physical modeling, and data analysis;
  • Research and development track record in high-technology engineering or physical sciences, demonstrated through scholarly publications or granted patents
  • Experience with international or remote collaboration and related projects
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong and active professional network
