Optics Technician

Job Description

Job Title: Optics Technician. Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:

  • Build and commission optics and laser systems for advanced quantum computing platforms based on trapped-ion technology
  • Work closely with technicians, engineers, and scientists on system builds, upgrades, and maintenance
  • Support research projects related to next-generation quantum systems
  • Assemble electronic subsystems and perform fault finding, including continuity testing
  • Handle high precision and delicate optical components
  • Perform optical alignment using laser systems;
  • Test high-technology equipment before shipping
  • Manage stock control, purchasing, and supplier relationships
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation
  • Maintain a safe, organized lab and workshop environment, following laser safety standards

Qualifications:

  • Around 3 years of relevant industrial operations experience
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment involving lasers and optics
  • Ability to assemble electronic subsystems and troubleshoot faults
  • Experience handling high precision optical parts and laser equipment;
  • Experience testing complex scientific or high-technology equipment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience working from mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring, microscope use, and fine part handling

Preferred:

  • Experience with optical alignment using laser systems
  • Laser safety training for Class 4 laser systems
  • Experience assembling and testing scientific instrumentation;
  • Experience in a scientific support role or commercial research environment
  • Advanced or Modern Apprenticeship Level 3 in Engineering, HNC Level 4 in Engineering, or similar qualification
  • Strong IT skills
