Photonics Fabrication Process Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Photonics Fabrication Process Engineer. Location: United States

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize fabrication process modules for integrated photonic devices built from thin film lithium niobate
  • Design and execute process improvement experiments, including fabrication splits and inline data collection
  • Define and carry out metrology and failure analysis plans to identify and reduce failure modes
  • Improve key performance metrics in integrated photonics fabrication;
  • Stay updated with new developments in photonics fabrication and implement improvements quickly
  • Work closely with physicists and engineers to support photonic quantum computing hardware development
  • Interface with internal teams to understand detector performance requirements
  • Travel weekly to cleanroom partner facilities in Canada and the USA;
  • Contribute to process optimization and continuous improvement efforts

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, Experimental Sciences, or related field focused on device fabrication, or a Master’s degree with 3+ years of cleanroom process development experience
  • Hands-on experience with cleanroom tools such as photolithography, deposition (PVD, CVD), wet and plasma etching (RIE, ICP), and material characterization tools including XRR, XRD, SEM, AFM, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and ellipsometry
  • Knowledge of birefringent thin film stack metrology, characterization, and optimization
  • Experience developing cleanroom recipes and maintaining detailed documentation
  • Experience with statistical process control;
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as Python, GitHub, JMP, MATLAB, or similar
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced setting and manage multiple priorities
  • Availability for travel up to 20 percent

Preferred:

  • Experience in integrated photonics, including passive and active components such as waveguides, modulators, switches, beamsplitters, resonators, and MZIs
  • Proven record of achieving low loss in integrated photonic components through fabrication process development
  • Experience designing photonic components, including device simulations and layout;
  • Experience working with large data sets and statistical reporting
