FPGA Design Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior FPGA Design Engineer. Location: Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada

This role combines hardware design, software integration, and system optimization to improve the performance & scalability of D-Wave’s next-generation quantum processor systems.

Duties:

• Design and implement FPGA-based control and readout systems using Xilinx RFSoCs.
• Improve and maintain existing electronic systems used for quantum processor control;
• Lead design efforts for high-speed, low-noise electronics, ensuring precision and reliability.
• Work closely with teams across engineering, software, and processor development to integrate FPGA solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and act as the FPGA expert within the team.
• Document designs and communicate progress across internal teams;
• Conduct troubleshooting using circuit debugging tools such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers.
• Perform high-speed PCB design and signal integrity analysis.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Experimental Physics.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on FPGA design experience, preferably with Xilinx/AMD RFSoC devices.
• Strong proficiency in VHDL or Verilog (VHDL preferred);
• Programming experience in Python and C++.
• Strong understanding of high-speed serial interfaces like DDR, PCIe, and Ethernet.
• Experience with OrCad schematic and PCB layout tools.
• Skilled in microwave circuit design including filtering, switching, and transmission lines.
• Familiarity with superconducting circuits and quantum system integration.
• Excellent debugging, analytical, and communication skills;
• Registration as an EIT or Professional Engineer in British Columbia is preferred.
