(Senior) Quantum Hardware Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: (Senior) Quantum Hardware Engineer. Location: On-site, Garching bei München and Ulm, Germany

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of a key subsystem of the quantum computer, including optical subsystems, laser systems, and quantum processor operation
  • Design, build, and optimize high-performance experimental setups for neutral atom quantum systems
  • Integrate subsystems into the full quantum computing stack and ensure reliable system operation
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, and electrical teams for seamless performance
  • Drive improvements in system stability, scalability, and performance;
  • Contribute to system architecture decisions and technical roadmap

Qualifications:

  • PhD or Postdoc in AMO physics or a related field
  • Strong hands-on experience with optical setups, lasers, and experimental quantum systems
  • Proven experience building and operating complex experimental setups
  • Background in areas such as optical tweezer arrays, Rydberg atoms, ultracold atoms, trapped ions, UHV systems, or high-precision imaging systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to take ownership and independently drive complex systems

Preferred:

  • Programming experience such as Python for experiment control or data analysis
  • Experience with electronics or control systems
  • Mechanical design experience such as CAD;
  • Experience scaling research setups into robust systems
  • Prior experience in industry or startup environments
