Sr. Software Engineer, Back-end

Job Description

Job Title: Sr. Software Engineer, Back-end. Location: Sydney, Australia

This position offers the opportunity to work with world-class researchers and engineers, contributing directly to software that drives quantum advantage.

Duties:

  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend services using Python.
  • Maintain and enhance the compiler stack for OpenQASM3 and OpenPulse programs;
  • Collaborate with researchers and quantum engineers to turn experimental needs into reliable production code.
  • Test and validate compiler outputs through hands-on experiments on quantum hardware.
  • Build and maintain high-performance APIs using gRPC, GraphQL, and REST.
  • Contribute to software design patterns, tools, and best practices that improve quantum control systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support cross-functional collaboration;
  • Write maintainable, testable, and well-documented code aligned with best practices.
  • Engage in system-level programming to optimize performance and reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in backend software development using Python;
  • Proven ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code.
  • Experience with compiler development or pulse-level programming (OpenQASM3, Qiskit Pulse, or Qua).
  • Familiarity with Python web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
  • Strong collaboration and mentoring skills in a team environment.
  • Experience with quantum hardware control systems or similar infrastructure;
  • Bonus skills include C++ or Rust for CPython extensions, FPGA programming, compiler theory, or low-latency systems.
