Microwave Engineer, Quantum Processor

Job Description

Job Title: Microwave Engineer, Quantum Processor Microwave Design. Location: Berkeley, CA, USA

You will focus on superconducting circuits, full-wave electromagnetic simulation, and layout optimization to improve performance, reduce loss, and minimize crosstalk in next-generation quantum processors.

Duties:

  • Design, lay out, and simulate superconducting microwave integrated circuits for quantum processors.
  • Optimize on-chip signal delivery including routing, filtering, and multiplexing.
  • Perform full-wave electromagnetic simulations using finite element tools to analyze resonant structures and coupling.
  • Engineer mode profiles and feedline coupling to improve device performance;
  • Analyze simulation and experimental data to identify and reduce loss, crosstalk, and unwanted microwave effects.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and experimental teams to evaluate and select circuit architectures.
  • Contribute to the design of multi-qubit microwave circuits for future quantum processors.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong background in microwave engineering, including theory, simulation, and practical design.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools such as HFSS, COMSOL, or CST.
  • Solid mathematical foundation, including linear algebra and numerical methods;
  • Programming experience in Python for scientific or engineering applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with 2D CAD tools for IC layout and the GDS file format.
  • Familiarity with gdspy or similar tools for automated layout generation.
  • Understanding of quantum mechanics or circuit quantum electrodynamics.
  • Experience with semiconductor fabrication processes;
  • Contributions to open source software or prior startup experience.

Benefits and Instructions:

  • Base salary range: $145,000–$175,000 per year.
  • Final compensation depends on experience, skills, and location.
