Job Description
Job Title: Quantum Applications Scientist. Location: Göteborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden
The role involves working closely with IonQ’s engineering, cloud, and compiler teams to design scalable workflows for trapped-ion quantum computers while collaborating with partners in the Swedish innovation ecosystem and beyond.
Duties:
- Lead the design and development of new hybrid quantum algorithms and applications for large-scale optimization problems.
- Collaborate with compiler, system, and cloud engineers to create optimized workflows for IonQ’s trapped-ion hardware;
- Evaluate and compare quantum and classical optimization methods, analyzing scalability, performance trade-offs, and efficiency.
- Communicate technical findings and strategies to clients and internal stakeholders;
- Partner with customers to define and solve real-world optimization problems using IonQ’s quantum systems.
- Build and maintain reusable software frameworks and contribute to integrated end-to-end solutions.
- Represent IonQ in presentations, workshops, and customer meetings.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another STEM field, or equivalent experience.
- At least five years of experience developing and implementing optimization algorithms in areas such as logistics, transportation, or smart grids.
- Expertise in Python and Qiskit, with working knowledge of C++;
- Proven experience using commercial and open-source optimization tools to solve complex industrial problems.
- Strong understanding of mathematical concepts such as linear algebra, matrix decomposition, and computational complexity.
- Excellent communication and client collaboration skills with a record of delivering projects of commercial impact;
- Experience integrating NISQ-era algorithms such as QAOA, varQITE, or quantum annealing into hybrid systems is a plus.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.
