Job Description
Job Title: Staff Quantum Applications Scientist – Optimization. Location: Göteborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden
This role is part of the Quantum Applications team in Gothenburg and centers on building solutions for complex optimization problems using trapped-ion quantum computers; You will work closely with internal engineering teams, customers, and the wider innovation ecosystem to push quantum computing beyond classical limits.
Duties:
- Lead the design and development of hybrid quantum algorithms for optimization with clear advantages over classical methods.
- Collaborate with compiler, cloud, and systems teams to build optimized workflows for trapped-ion hardware.
- Analyze classical and quantum optimization methods, including scaling behavior, trade-offs, and crossover points;
- Translate technical analysis into clear strategies to improve algorithm efficiency and performance.
- Work directly with customers to define real-world problems and deliver impactful quantum solutions.
- Present technical results to clients and stakeholders, adapting content to different audiences;
- Build reusable software platforms and integrate first-of-a-kind quantum algorithms into end-to-end workflows.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years of professional experience solving optimization problems in areas such as supply chain, logistics, transportation, networks, or smart grids.
- Strong background in optimization algorithms and software development, including publications, code contributions, or client portfolios;
- Solid understanding of core mathematical concepts used in quantum computing.
- Demonstrated experience with Python, Qiskit, and working knowledge of C++;
- Experience applying commercial and open-source optimization tools to real-world problems.
- Proven ability to work directly with customers and deliver solutions with commercial impact.
