Scientist, Quantum Sensing (Magnetometry)

Job Description

Job Title: Scientist, Quantum Sensing (Magnetometry Modeling). Location: Oxford, UK; Sydney, Australia

This role sits within the Quantum Sensing Research team and focuses on applying quantum control, advanced signal processing, and statistical modeling to improve magnetometer performance under noisy conditions; You will work across theory, software, and deployed hardware to deliver practical quantum sensing solutions.

Duties:

  • Perform time-series analysis and develop noise compensation techniques for quantum sensing platforms.
  • Apply advanced statistical methods such as Kalman and particle filters to improve sensor sensitivity and stability.
  • Design and implement quantum control algorithms for optically pumped atomic magnetometers;
  • Develop, test, and maintain high-quality Python software for modeling, signal processing, and data analysis.
  • Apply algorithms to real, field-deployed quantum sensing hardware and refine performance based on experimental results.
  • Collaborate closely with quantum sensing engineers, experimental physicists, and modeling teams.
  • Share results through technical reports, presentations, academic publications, and internal knowledge sharing.
  • Support broader company objectives by contributing across team boundaries when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong background in digital signal processing, including time and frequency analysis.
  • Experience with statistical filtering techniques such as Kalman and particle filters;
  • Experience in modeling or optimization of atomic spin ensembles, warm atomic vapor sensors, or pulse-level quantum control.
  • Ability to translate theoretical models into practical, deployable software solutions.

Benefits and Instructions:

  • Full-time, permanent role with a hybrid work setup in Oxford or Sydney.
  • Competitive salary, equity potential, and benefits aligned with a high-performance culture.
  • Flexible work environment focused on outcomes rather than hours;
  • Opportunity to work on field-deployed quantum sensing systems with real-world impact.
  • Q-CTRL uses AI tools to support parts of the hiring process, with final decisions made by humans.
  • All official communications will come from the @q-ctrl.com domain only.
  • Recruitment agencies should note that unsolicited profiles are not accepted.
