Job Description

Job Title: Senior Scientist-SNSPDs. Location: Toronto, ON, Canada

This role sits within the Low Temperature Devices Team and focuses on pushing the limits of single-photon detection performance; You will own SNSPD development from early design to deployment in large-scale detector arrays that support Xanadu’s quantum photonic architecture.

Duties:

• Design, assemble, test, and deploy SNSPD systems with ultra-high detection efficiency and fast reset times.
• Take full technical ownership of detector development from concept to validation.
• Operate and maintain cryogenic systems, including dilution refrigerators and He-4 based systems.
• Improve detector scalability and performance through iterative cryostat-based testing;
• Develop high-bandwidth, low-latency RF readout electronics for SNSPDs.
• Collaborate with internal teams, foundry partners, packaging engineers, and technicians.
• Validate optical coupling performance, repeatability, and long-term stability.
• Challenge current state-of-the-art performance metrics aligned with Xanadu’s architecture.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• At least 2 years of postdoctoral or industry experience.
• Proven experience designing, characterizing, and improving SNSPD devices;
• Strong hands-on experience with cryostats, cooldowns, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Experience with high-bandwidth RF electronics and analog test equipment.
• Ability to work independently and across teams in a fast-paced research environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail.

Benefits and Compensation:

• Base salary range: 140,000 to 190,000 CAD, based on experience and location.
