Job Description

Job Title: Software Engineer, Back-end. Location: Sydney, Australia

The role focuses on building the software backbone that powers advanced quantum technologies; You will work in a global engineering environment where software meets quantum physics, developing scalable & high-performance backend systems that support Q-CTRL’s commercial and research products.

Duties:

• Design, develop, and optimize backend applications in Python to support real-world quantum systems.
• Build efficient communication between services using modern protocols;
• Collaborate with researchers to convert experimental and research code into production-ready software.
• Partner with product, frontend, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated features.
• Implement and maintain high standards for code quality, security, and performance.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and optimize backend services for reliability at scale;
• Develop reusable and scalable architectures to support multiple business applications.
• Take on additional engineering responsibilities as the team grows and new challenges arise.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience using Python, Rust, C++, or similar languages.
• Strong collaboration experience across research and engineering teams;
• Deep understanding of domain-driven design, service-oriented architecture, asynchronous processing, and testing.
• Proven problem-solving ability and ownership mindset;
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Experience with algorithm design, software optimization, or statistical modeling.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of APIs (gRPC, GraphQL, REST) and web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
• Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure;
• Familiarity with distributed systems, database optimization, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to Kubernetes, observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch), or data orchestration systems (Airflow, Snowflake, dbt).
• Interest in quantum computing, signal processing, or scientific computing;
• Experience in startup or fast-paced environments.
