VP of Facilities

Job Description

Job Title: VP of Facilities. Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; Remote

The role will oversee the planning, construction, and maintenance of facilities supporting quantum computing labs, cryoplants, commercial offices, and R&D sites; You will guide cross-functional teams and ensure operational excellence, compliance with global safety standards, and readiness for technology scale-up.

Duties:

  • Provide strategic leadership by setting business goals, developing facility strategies, and contributing to long-term organizational decisions.
  • Collaborate with executives to shape company growth and operational strategy;
  • Supervise daily operations of Facilities and EHS teams in Chicago, ensuring compliance with company policies and local regulations.
  • Lead development of Maintenance and EHS teams, including implementing new Computerized Maintenance Systems (CMMS) and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Oversee construction, development, and operation of quantum computer sites, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Manage budgets, monitor costs, and ensure cost-efficient operations;
  • Evaluate departmental performance, identify improvements, and foster a productive team environment.
  • Navigate permits, government approvals, and safety regulations for new quantum computing facilities.
  • Research and implement innovative methods to enhance operational efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Building Trades, Project Management, or related field.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in facilities or engineering management, including at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of global safety practices, EHS regulations, and compliance requirements;
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects, vendor contracts, and budgets.
  • Ability to read architectural and construction drawings.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex issues clearly to senior leadership.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, and be on-call for facilities emergencies.
  • High emotional intelligence, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills;
  • Familiarity with MS Office Suite and ability to create professional presentations.
  • MBA and experience managing EHS teams, leases, and contractors are preferred.

Benefits and Instructions:

  • Competitive base salary: $250,000–$310,000 in Chicago, $250,000–$285,000 elsewhere in the U.S.
