Physicist - Resilience Engineering & Operations

Job Description

Job Title: Physicist - Resilience Engineering and Operations. Location: Basel, Basel-Stadt, Switzerland

Recent graduates are encouraged to apply, with full training provided in quantum computer operation and maintenance; The role is based onsite in Basel with limited remote flexibility.

Duties:

  • Maintain high uptime and performance of IonQ’s commercial quantum systems through monitoring, maintenance, and engineering improvements.
  • Operate and support state-of-the-art trapped-ion quantum hardware.
  • Automate processes to improve system stability and performance;
  • Work closely with physicists and engineers to develop tools that enhance current and future systems.
  • Support customers by ensuring reliable and consistent system operation.
  • Participate in 24/7 follow-the-sun on-call rotations as part of a rotating schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in physics, engineering, or a related physical science.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in atomic or optical physics.
  • Experience with optical alignment, laser systems, laser stabilization, or AOMs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a distributed team environment with strong communication skills.
  • Formal education or training in statistics;
  • Comfort working flexible hours, including on-call rotations.
  • Strong interest in learning new technologies and adapting to a fast-changing environment.

Preferred:

  • PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong programming experience with Python or JavaScript.
  • Experience in data analysis, data science, or machine learning;
  • Software engineering experience supporting scientific or production systems.
