Senior Systems Architect - Quantum

Job Title: Senior Systems Architect. Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom

Oxford Ionics, part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing using world-leading trapped-ion technology. We are building powerful, accurate, and reliable quantum systems to solve problems beyond the reach of today’s supercomputers.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect the next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers, focusing on electronic qubit control.
  • Make system-level decisions on distributing complexity across subsystems, supported by technical feasibility analyses.
  • Support detailed design, manufacture, operation, and characterisation of new quantum systems.
  • Continuously update architectural plans based on experimental findings and system performance data;
  • Collaborate across disciplines, integrating science and engineering insights into system-level designs.
  • Translate complex and ambiguous problems into clear architectural strategies that guide project progress.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of academic or industrial experience in quantum computing.
  • Broad understanding of the quantum stack, with deep familiarity with quantum hardware in practice.
  • Hands-on experience contributing to design, operation, or experimental characterisation of quantum hardware.
  • Strong analytical and scientific computing skills, able to back architectural decisions with evidence;
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex system trade-offs to varied technical audiences.

Preferred:

  • Experience with trapped-ion systems or electronic qubit control.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple technical disciplines in fast-moving environments.
  • Experience in integrating experimental findings into system architecture.
