Job Description
Job Title: Software Engineering Runtime Manager. Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom
Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Runtime team of around five engineers developing key components of the quantum computer stack.
- Oversee planning and execution of software that powers trapped-ion quantum systems.
- Own and manage the team backlog, ensuring priorities align with company timelines;
- Work closely with software engineers, quantum scientists, and project management teams.
- Capture internal feature requests and external requirements, and translate them into clear development goals.
- Provide regular updates on delivery progress, technical challenges, and proposed solutions.
- Ensure balance between development speed and software quality.
- Support performance reviews, career development, and team well-being;
- Collaborate with the Director of System Software to plan team growth and long-term strategy.
- Coordinate software that interfaces between complex hardware systems and quantum circuits.
Qualifications:
- Strong experience working with Linux-based systems.
- Experience interfacing with hardware using protocols such as USB, PCIe, and Ethernet.
- Proven experience leading a technical software team of subject matter experts.
- Ability to set clear priorities and manage critical versus urgent tasks;
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred:
- Experience working with FPGAs.
- Familiarity with Rust and Windows environments.
- Experience in feature tracking, scoping, estimation, and release planning.
- Background working with hardware control systems and real-time environments.
