Job Description

Job Title: Advanced Experimental Physicist. Location: London, Cambridge, or Oxford, UK

You will help design, test, and refine next-generation quantum systems while contributing to ongoing research, publications and scientific outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide remote support for commercial trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Use prior laboratory experience to design, build, verify, and improve systems that manipulate trapped ions as qubits.
  • Work closely with scientists and engineers to develop and test new hardware concepts;
  • Operate in a research lab environment to collect data, analyze performance, and characterize device behavior.
  • Perform design trade studies and technical analysis to guide hardware decisions;
  • Present scientific work at conferences or through peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications:

  • PhD completed before starting.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience (PhD inclusive) in one or more areas such as quantum information, qubits, atomic physics, precision spectroscopy, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, cryogenics, or laser work;
  • Experience building, operating, or modeling experimental systems.
  • Skill in programming control systems for data collection, signal processing, and analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication, with published research in relevant fields;
  • Experience in post-doctoral or mentorship roles and proven organizational or leadership ability.

Additional Valued Experience:

  • Hands-on work with devices for quantum information processing.
  • Background in laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms;
  • Experience running simulations or modelling to guide experiments.
